What is Human Rights Due Diligence?

The Office of the Anti-Slavery Commissioner, in partnership with the UN Global Compact Network Australia, last week launched its first joint publication – What is Human Rights Due Diligence?

This publication provides Australian businesses and other stakeholders with an introduction to human rights due diligence. It sets out the key principles and steps in the process, and builds understanding of this internationally recognised framework for managing human rights risk.

It responds to a growing recognition among Australian businesses of the value of human rights due diligence and the need for guidance. With the Australian Government consulting on potential due diligence reforms and evolving global regulatory expectations, this publication supports businesses to respond to these developments and take a practical approach to human rights issues, including modern slavery.

The Anti-Slavery Commissioner, Chris Evans, explains: "Australian businesses that are developing and implementing due diligence processes will be well placed to meet legal and stakeholder expectations, remain competitive in key markets, and deliver on their core values."
