International students contribute significantly to Australia's communities, campuses and economy, but they can also face serious risks of exploitation. The Migrant Justice Institute's Off the Books report found that two-thirds of surveyed migrant employees were paid less than they were owed.

The Safeguarding Students Against Modern Slavery and Exploitation: A Toolkit helps universities respond. Developed by the University of Sydney, in partnership with Office of the Australian Anti-Slavery Commissioner, it provides:

  • tools to raise student awareness across the student journey
  • training and a three-step process (identify, respond, refer) to help staff support students at risk
  • guidance on embedding safeguarding in university governance and systems
